Nació el 16 de julio de 1907 en Brooklyn, New York. Inicia su carrera como chorus girl en las Ziegfeld Follies y poco a poco accedió a primeros papeles de Broadway. En 1927 se inicia en el mundo del cine. Firmó contrato con la Columbia y con la Warner. Debutó con La puerta cerrada (The Locked Door, G. Fitzmaurice, 1929). Frank Capra la eligió para protagonizar Mujeres ligeras (1930). Rodaron juntos The Miracle Woman (1931) Amor prohibido (1932) y La amargura del general Yen (1933). William A. Weilman le ofreció papeles en películas como Enfermeras de noche (1931) y So Big (1932). Encarnó a muchachas de extracción popular en Juan Nadie (F. Capra, 1941), Bola de fuego (H.Hawks, 1942) y La estrella de variedades (Wellman, 1943), o como en Stella Dallas (K.Vidor, 1937), las grandes heroínas del melodrama. Además era capaz de convertirse en la más duras de las heroinas del thriller (Perdición, B. Wilder, 1944; The Strange Love of Martha Ivers, L. Milestone, 1946; Voces de muerte, A. Litvak, 1948; Thelma Jordan , R. Siodmak, 1950). Falleció el 20 de enero de 1990.
